The organization was formed in 1927 by a group of individuals interested in preserving the land and legacy of the Olaf Ohman farm where the famous Kensington Rune Stone was discovered. The organization became an official non-profit in 1973.
Since then, the Foundation has assisted Douglas County in aquiring additional acreage surrounding the farmstead, which now includes over 400 acres.
The foundation is an auxiliary to the Douglas County Parks Division and collaborates with them to support and facilitate park projects. The Foundation also plays an active role in park planning and development.
Providing a hands on experience, enhanced with geology and archaeology, the park proves to be an historic tourism destination.
